Windward Coast

Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Daeja Faris

Skyscrapers and the sprawling city of Honolulu give way to lush valleys and country landscapes as you drive up the sloping Pali Highway. Exiting the tunnels east of the Koolau Mountain Range feels like entering a different world, with a turquoise ocean shimmering in the distance. A trip to the Windward Coast reveals a slower-paced side of Oahu, as well as some of the most stunning natural beauty in Hawaii.

Mokolii, the tiny island pointing up from the sea, is impossible to miss as you drive along the two-lane highway. Stop by a park to stretch your legs or enjoy a picnic. Just across the highway is Kuaola Ranch, one of Hawaii’s most visible but little-known attractions. The scenic valley of this generations-old family-owned ranch has served as the backdrop for numerous movies and TV shows, including “Jurassic Park” and “Lost.” Visitors can enjoy horseback riding, ziplining, ATV tours, and a variety of other activities.
